SOCIAL STUDIES
Social studies activities help students develop an awareness of community, appreciate cultural diversity, and better understand themselves and others. Transitional Kinder students walk to the local library and Kindergarten students visit the local fire department to experience firsthand the work of our local community institutions. The study of the local and global community, public workers, basic concepts of government and economics make up the primary school curriculum. Middle elementary students focus on geography, Native cultures, California and United States history.
National and cultural holidays are celebrated throughout the year in a variety of ways. Creating Latin American flags for Hispanic Heritage month, making an altar for Dia de Los Muertos, making moon cakes for the Chinese Moon Festival or inviting Lion dancers and a Kung Fu master to lead demonstrations for the Chinese New Year, All Souls truly embraces a multicultural and interactive approach to social studies and civic education.
How to build and sustain a peace-filled community is central to an All Souls education. Through the intersection of religion and social studies, All Souls focuses on a virtue of the month. Teachers hold weekly class meetings to discuss classroom issues and engage in conflict resolution. Role-plays and literature focused on important values such as integrity, respect, kindness, honor, empathy, and hospitality, help students learn to honor fellow students and create loving classroom spaces.
